Runes is a project that begins with the Circle of Fifths as a common theoretical muse to produce a multi-disciplinary composition of design, music, and art, linked through a shared narrative.

In music theory, the Circle of Fifths is a graphic representation of the relationship between the twelve tones of the chromatic scale, their corresponding key signatures, and the associated major and minor keys. It is typically drawn as a two-dimensional diagram. This representation allows it to be easily applied, but obscures the formative structure beneath. Its basis is a perfect geometric pattern, each scale with a consistent relationship to the next, ultimately returning upon itself and creating an infinite loop.

The project began by questioning how this two-dimensional diagram could be translated into a three-dimensional form. Of primary importance was the maintenance of functionality - the form should be legible and convey the same information as the original diagram. The investigation was then free to question the further functionality a three-dimensional representation could add.

One of the developed forms is presented here in Runes.

This representation makes visible the formative pattern of the Circle of Fifths not displayed in the traditional two-dimensional diagram. The overlapping of neighbouring musical scales, dropping or rising at their perfect fifths, makes visible its inherent pattern. It is a sacred geometry that is forged purely from its function. In this new form, the direct parallels of proportion/interval to our aesthetic understanding of the visual and aural are revealed.

A narrative, taking the form of a cinematic storyboard, serves as a method to present this new representation of the Circle of Fifths. The music scores this imaginary film, using the Circle of Fifths not only as a cinematic cue, but also as an experimental tool for composition.
